DIY Laundry Detergent and a Peep show

March 19, 2014

Last week kiddo and I made laundry detergent and washing soda together. DH accused me of trying to kill them because the smell from heating baking soda was quite strong. I probably needed to turn the fans on in the house. I did have the windows open. Here is the recipe I used from Sweeter Lemon.

Mix together in a large container. Use approximately 1 tablespoon per load. You may need to experiment if your water is hard/soft.

I might try liquid detergent next. Here is one recipe I found on I believe you can use just about any bar of soap you like in either of these recipes. Here’s a video on how you make your own washing soda.

FTY: Internet Video

January 28, 2011

I like internet video, more than I like cable.  Here’s a few thoughts I’ve had lately…

What’s going on in the gulf in 2011? Kindra Speaks

Shouldn’t what’s going on in the Gulf still be national news?

TED: intersection of economics and ecology @ plastics aka Don’t feel all that good about recycling plastic.

I think it is that time in the season for me when I start feeling crappy. Currently my kid has six open kiddie paint containers next to me. <I really want to yell at her about putting the caps on>  All I can picture is the paint getting all over my clothes somehow. I’m off to NCWU’s Wake County Agenda Assembly tomorrow morning. I’m sure I will have tons to say after the meeting.

FTY: Leaving the world better than when we found it

December 24, 2010

The following story stole my grinchy heart.

Real Heroine/Shero :Selena Robinson: Steel-Willed Angel

by Carl Hoffman

She has served on the boards of the local Meals on Wheels program, the Brevard City Personnel Board, the local health department, Pisgah Legal Services (a legal-aid service for low-income individuals), the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the Transylvania County Historical Society, and the executive board of the Land-of-Sky Regional Council, among others. She is vice president of her community organization, director of ushers and president of the Missionary Circle at her church, a Girl Scout leader, and, until recently, a member of the local hospital auxiliary. (“I had to give something up,” she says.) Along an entire wall of her house are certificates and plaques and letters, over 20 of them. There’s the 1997 “Fine Womanhood Award” from Zeta Phi Beta sorority; a tribute from the state of North Carolina signed by Governor James B. Hunt; the keys to the city of Brevard; even a letter from President Ronald Reagan. “Sometimes I wonder if I deserve all this,” she says, “but I didn’t do it for any praise. I did it to help people.”

Overshadowing all the awards, however, a tree made out of green felt takes pride of place in Robinson’s living room. At the top are two names: Selena and Chester, followed by descending rows of hearts, each with a name: 14 children, 43 grandchildren, and 59 great-grandchildren. “I asked God, if he would let me get my children out of diapers and bottles, then I would help somebody else,” Robinson says, eyeing the impressive tree. “We need to leave this world in better shape than we found it in.”

Making Happy

November 24, 2010

I was having myself a little pity party. All this TSA theatre is bringing me down. Then I decided to re-read some of my meditation book Coming to Our Senses. I dunno but I think this is what Jon Stewart was trying to say in his interview with Rachel Maddow

from The Taming Power of The Small in Coming to Our Senses(link above)

We are wont to villify particularly egregious emergences of ignorance as evil. This allows us to assert categorically our own identification with goodness in contradistinction. It is a gross and ultimately unhelpful gloss, even if there are elements of truth in it. Both views, of others as evil and of ourselves as good, may be better characterized as ignorant. For both ignore the fundamental disease, the one that manifests in human beings when we fall prey to unawareness of the preciousness of life, and wantonly or witlessly harm others in seeking pleasure or power for ourselves.

Coming to Our Senses is going to be a book I buy to read again and again.

These vids/ orgs make me HAPPY!!

Another Northern Sun favorite.

Mine and my dad’s favorite, Jimi! Thought this was appropriate today with the jokers and thieves together. 😉  <rally to restore sanity>

Lyrics: All Along The Watchtower

There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
Theres too much confusion
I cant get no relief
Businessman they drink my wine
Plow men dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody of it is worth
Hey hey

No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke but uh
But you and I weve been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hours getting late

All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Bare-foot servants to, but huh
Outside in the cold distance
A wild cat did growl
Two riders were approachin
And the wind began to howl
All along the watchtower
Hear you sing around the watch
Gotta beware gotta beware I will
Ooh baby
All along the watchtower
